Beulah Marie Dix was born in Kingston, Massachusetts, in 1876. Educated at public schools in Plymouth and Chelsea, Dix entered Radcliffe College at the age of 16, where she concentrated in history and literature. She was the first woman to win the George B. Sohier Prize offered for the best thesis submitted by an undergraduate or graduate of Harvard or Radcliffe in English.
